Candida Albicans — Platelet Interaction: Molecules Involved in the Adherence
We have already described the Candida albicans interaction with platelet1. This interaction seems to be mediated by the fibrillar layer of the cell wall which is always present on the germ tube of Candida albicans. This layer is also present on blastospores when they are cultured on rich medium, but is not usually found after growth on Medium 1992. The specificity of this interaction was demonstrated by inhibition tests using platelet extracts and anti-C.albicans germ tube antibodies (C.Mahaza-unpublished data). This suggests the presence of a binding affinity between proteins or mannoproteins of the yeast and the surface molecules of platelets. In this study, affino-binding techniques carried out with radiolabelled components led to to identification of a 45–47 kDA molecule from Candida albicans surface layer capable of fixing the GP IIb–IIIa complex of the platelet membrane.
