Abstract

Despite optimal pharmacotherapy, about 30% of patients with focal epilepsies arising from the temporal lobe are frequently refractory to anticonvulsant medication (Schmidt, 1981). Up to 50 % of these patients can be cured of their seizures by surgical removal of the epileptogenic focus (Glaser, 1980). Prerequisite for successful surgical intervention is the accurate localisation and lateralisation of the epileptogenic focus, which often can only be achieved through such invasive procedures as EEG examination with subdural or depth electrodes (Wieser, 1983).
