Neuropeptides Receptors Changes in Huntington’s Chorea Basal Ganglia are Unrelated to Changes in Neuropeptides Levels
We have studied the distribution and densities of receptors for somatostatin, neurotensin and substance P in basal ganglia of patients affected by Huntington’s chorea using autoradiographic techniques. Somatostatin binding sites density appear to be decreased in neostriatum of these patients, probably because they are located on neurons sensitive to the disease process of Huntington’s chorea. Neurotensin and substance P receptors densities were found to be comparable to those of control cases suggesting that they are located on surviving neurons. Previous reports stated that in the same region the concentration of the peptide somatostatin is greatly increased, substance P is decreased and neurotensin is in the control range. Consequently, changes in receptors appear largely unrelated to alterations in transmitter levels. Our results suggest that receptors are expressed by cells which are different from those expressing the transmitter.
