Abstract
The current overview presents HSV-1 pathogenicity and latency from the point of view of a practicing ophthalmologist. It begins with the premise that “man is the measure of all things.” The devastation wrought by herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) in the human eye is both significant and widespread. HSV-1 is the leading infectious cause of corneal blindness in the industrialized world, and there are over 300,000 cases of herpetic eye infection annually in the United States (1). Our goal in ophthalmology is to reduce and ultimately prevent the visual loss due to herpes simplex eye infections.
