On the Biology of Epstein-Barr Virus Persistence: A Reappraisal

Part of the book series: Advances in Experimental Medicine and Biology ((AEMB,volume 278))

Abstract

One of the central unsolved questions of Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) biology is the mechanism of virus persistence in the immunologically competent host. In vitro this virus displays potent growth-transforming activity for one of its major target cells, the B lymphocyte; in vivo virus infection of the B-cell pool appears to be very largely asymptomatic. Much current work on the biology and immunology of EBV infection is aimed at resolving this apparent paradox. The present paper reviews recent progress in the field and develops a provisional model for asymptomatic EBV persistence. The principal gaps in our knowledge will be identified as a stimulus for future work.
