Prenatal Viral Infection as an Etiological Agent in Adult Schizophrenia
There is a significant body of literature suggesting structural abnormalities in the brains of schizophrenics; these abnormalities appear to be nondegenerative and may be perinatal in origin (Kovelman and Scheibel, 1986; Weinberger, 1987; Bogerts, 1988; Lyon et al.,1989). Though researchers have focused on delivery complications (McNeil, 1988) as the source of these perinatal abnormalities, there are several lines of evidence that indicate schizophrenia may also result from a disturbance of gestation. These include postmortem histopathological studies of the brains of adult schizophrenics and studies showing an association between risk of prenatal viral infection and subsequent increases in the birthrate of schizophrenics.
