Abstract
This symposium presents a number of excellent papers on how to gather information on in situ biological conditions, especially at waste sites. Over the years biologists have had little difficulty gathering large amounts of information about our living environment. This is not surprising given the enormous variety and complexity of ecological systems; there are an almost endless number of features to be measured.
