Traveling Waves in a Partly Solidified Mixture

In the classical Bénard problem a horizontal, single component liquid layer is heated at the bottom and cooled at the top. If a critical temperature difference across the layer is exceeded, the heat conduction state becomes unstable and steady convection is observed.
