Interfacial Oscillations and Solitons Driven by the Marangoni Effect

Abstract

Generally, interfacial waves or interfacial oscillations are damped by viscosity (1–3). However, if a non equilibrium distribution of surfactant, temperature, chemical potential or an electric field,... is imposed in the liquid, with mass and/or energy transfer across the surface, the Marangoni effect, i.e., stresses induced by the variation of the surface tension from point to point along the surface may transform the “thermal” or “chemical”,...energy into convective motion, overtaking the viscous dissipation and thus sustaining the wave motions (4–18).
