Management Development in a Changing Environment
In the 1970’s, changes began to shake AT&T as controversy brewed over whether the telecommunications industry should be open to competition. Anti-trust suits and legislative initiatives were began at this time, questioning AT&T’s position as a monopoly in the telecommunications industry. The culmination of all these activities was the historic divestiture agreement set forth early in 1984. It required that the 22 Bell Operating Companies be spun off from AT&T along with some other significant and major organizational restructuring. In short, the divestiture agreement set off a wave of consolidations, mergers, and downsizing within the organization. The effects of this activity are still being felt.
