Antioxidant Properties of an Antiischaemic Agent : Trimetazidine

Abstract

Trimetazidine (TMZ) has now been widely used throughout the world for more than ten years for the treatment of cellular manifestation of ischaemic disorders including coronary heart diseases, retinopathies and cochleo-vestibular diseases. Its efficacy has been assessed in double-blind studies versus placebo and versus reference drugs. In angina pectoris TMZ improves the patient’s condition in diminishing the number of daily attacks, assessed by the objective improvement of the exercise test : longer total duration (+ 18 %),. greater total work (+ 33 %) and delay in the 1 mm ST depression on the ECG which reflects a better tolerance to effort (Sellier, 1986). TMZ has also shown a very good tolerance and associated with other drugs, it allows to increase the therapeutical benefit (Brochier et al., 1986 ; Michaelides et al., 1987).
