Quenching of Singlet Molecular Oxygen by Tocopherols
Tocopherols are known for their activity as biological antioxidants (1). Attention has focused on their function as free radical scavengers, but it has also been shown that tocopherols are efficient scavengers of singlet molecular oxygen (102) (2–4). The formation and possible pathological consequences of singlet oxygen in biological systems has been proposed to occur during photoexcitation of a variety of biological compounds and xenobiotics (5,6). In addition,102 can be produced by non-photochemical processes, such as enzymatic reactions catalyzed by lipoxygenase and chloroperoxidase (7,8) and has been implicated in the peroxidation of biological lipids (see 9). Furthermore,102 has been shown to be capable of inducing DNA damage (10).
