Abstract
Shortly after fertilization, the rapidly dividing cells of the zygote initiate a multifaceted program of differentiation. Among the earliest changes is a strict regulation of cellular proliferation. Cell proliferation in higher eukaryotes generally depends upon the state of differentiation and the appropriate extracellular factors. For many of the cells that comprise multicellular organisms, extracellular signals control both differentiation and proliferation.
