Effect of Toxicants on Chitin Decomposition
Chitin is a polymer of ß-1, 4-N-acetyl-D-glucosamine. It is found within the cell walls of fungi, sporulating filamentous streptomycetes, the exoskeletons of insects, and other arthropods. In nature it serves as a significant source of nutrients which find their way into the food chain via the proper enzymes. The enzymes responsible for chitin degradation are primarily the chitinases and chitobiases produced by microbes. The chitinases degrade chitin into the dimer, chitobiase, and other soluble chitodextrins. These products are degraded into the N-acetyl-D-glucosamine molecule by the chitobiase enzyme.
