Translocation of Proteins into Mitochondria

Mitochondria, the eukaryotic organelles of oxidative phosphorylation, contain hundreds of different polypeptides. Only a small fraction of these (13 in humans) are encoded by mitochondrial DNA and made inside the mitochondria. All the others are encoded by nuclear genes, synthesized in the extramitochondrial cytoplasm, and then imported into one of the four major intramitochondrial compartments: outer membrane, intermembrane space, inner membrane, and matrix (Attardi and Schatz, 1988). How is this import achieved?
