Automated Classification of Resolved Galaxies

Abstract

The knowledge that galaxies, then undifferentiated from galactic nebulae, had different forms preceded the era of astronomical photography. Now morphological types establish a fundamental descriptive vocabulary for the study of galaxies and galactic systems (Hubble 1936, de Vaucouleurs 1959, Sandage 1975).
