The Oxygen Dependency of the Redox State of Heme and Copper in Cytochrome Oxidase In Vitro

Abstract

Near infrared spectrophotometry has been proposed as a tool for noninvasive evaluation of the metabolic processes in living tissue. With this technique, it is possible to monitor the tissue blood content, hemoglobin saturation level, and the redox state of copper in cytochrome oxidase. The redox behaviour of heme a+a3 in cytochrome oxidase and its use as an indicator of tissue oxygenation under low oxygen concentrations has already been studied by Oshino et al. (1974) However, there have been few studies upon the redox behaviour of copper under low oxygen concentrations corresponding to some mitochondrial energy states.
