There has been a riptide lashing at the coastline of our understandings about gender identity in the last 20 years. Our former heroes, those guides to definition of self, are dying, both figuratively and literally. New heroes haven’t yet replaced them, leaving few models for guiding us to what it means to be a woman or a man these days.
