Applications of the Uranyl Ion as a Fluorescent Probe in Model Biomembranes

The uranyl ion \(\left( {UO_2^{2 + } } \right)\) presents a well characterized luminescence, whose spectrum and lifetime are strongly dependent on temperature, pH and the presence of coordinated ligands (Jorgensen and Reisfeld, 1982; Miguel et al., 1984; Formosinho and Miguel, 1984; M. Moriyasu et al., 1977). In addition, this luminescence is strongly quenched by a variety of organic (Matsushima, 1972; Ambroz et al., 1984 and references therein) and inorganic (Matsushima et al., 1974; Marcantonatos, 1979) species. Previous studies from this laboratory have shown that this luminescence can be used to probe micellization in both ionic and non-ionic surfactants (Formosinho and Martinho do Rosario, 1978; Formosinho and Miguel, 1985).
