Superoxide Dismutase in Cultured Benign and Malignant Tumors of the Colon
A relative deficiency of the mitochondrial allele of superoxide dismutase (SODb) has been found in a variety of cancers both in vivo and in vitro. A decrease in the activity of SODb also has been described in cells from patients with two conditions that often are associated with cancer development, Down’s syndrome and Dubin-Johnson-Sprinz syndrome. Because of these associations it has been hypothesized that SODb deficiency not only is a good biochemical marker for the malignant phenotype, but also may play a central role in oncogenesis.1 More specifically, cells that are unable to induce or turn on SODb either prior to or as a result of initiation are more susceptible to the oxidative damage induced by tumor promoters.2,3
