Abstract

Glutathione peroxidase (E.C. 1.11.1.9)1 shall mean the selenoenzyme catalyzing the general reaction shown in eg. 1.

The term glutathione peroxidase here is not used for the so-called “non-Se-glutathione peroxidase”2 which, in fact is a transferase catalysing inter alia the transfer of GSH to H2O2 according to eq. 2.

which is followed by the presumably non-enzymatic reaction

Glutathione peroxidase is also distinct from a similar selenoenzyme acting on hydroperoxo groups of complex lipids integrated in membranes.3
