Abstract

The purpose of this chapter is to attempt to span the ground between the introduction to spectroscopy given in the previous chapter and the more sophisticated discussion of perfusion and flow given in later chapters. As such we shall provide a brief historical introduction to the different forms of “magnetic resonance imaging”. In particular we will end this chapter with a summary of a method which is currently the most widely used, and shall take this opportunity to give, effectively, a glossary of the terms which are encountered when one reads papers in clinical MRI.
