Abstract

General features of the hyperspherical adiabatic representation of atomic structure and spectra are illustrated by means of a pair of simple thought experiments. The thought experiments describe how correlated atomic wavefunctions evolve under independent variations of the nuclear charge and of the number density of electrons. Consequences of the theory include systematic patterns of configuration mixing in both ground state channels and multiply-excited states.
