Structure, Functional Domains and Subcellular Distribution of Glucocorticoid Receptor
Much interest has been focused on the steroid hormone receptor proteins during recent years. These proteins are transcriptional regulatory factors and have proven to be of central interest for research on gene regulation in eukaryotic cells. It was hypothesized early that the steroid hormones exerted their biological effects via the genome with the help of soluble receptor proteins (1), and this model, with minor modifications, holds true today, even with the more detailed information available. Our interest has focused on the glucocorticoid receptor protein (GR) and its mechanism of action. We have worked predominantly with the rat liver GR, although some work on the mouse and human GR has also been carried out at our laboratory. There are only minor differences between species. The structure and function of GR will be discussed in this chapter.
