Interactions between Lymphoid Cells and a Thymic Stromal Cell Line in Vitro

Abstract

Intrathymic T-cell differentiation is based on lympho-stromal interactions, resulting in the transmission of humoral and membrane-associated signals to thymocytes (Adkins et al., 1987). Particular lympho-stromal cell complexes have been identified, such as those between thymocytes and thymic nurse cells (Wekerle and Ketelson, 1980), dendritic cells (Kyewski et al., 1982) and macrophages (El Rouby et al., 1985). Using an assay developed by Stamper and Woodruff (1976) and modified by Butcher et al. (1979), we have shown specific adherence of thymocytes to a medullary thymic epithelial cell line, E-5, derived from C57BL/6 mice (Potworowski et al., 1986a,b).
