The Germinal Center Precursor Cell is Surface μ and σ Positive
Primary follicles in peripheral lymphoid organs consist of large aggregates of B cells, which express both IgM and IgD on their surface (1). Upon antigenic stimulation germinal centers (GC) arise within the follicles; these GC are thought to be instrumental in the production of B memory cells (2).The cells constituting the germinal centers express only small amounts of surface IgM and sometimes of other Ig classes (3),but not of IgD (1). The question then arises whether the sIgM+ —sIgD+ cells of primary follicles indeed are the precursor cells of germinal centers.
