Abstract

The shortage of cadaver organs for transplantation is serious (Levey et al., 1986). Yet, few studies have been made of the psychological reactions of families after they donate the organs of a relative (see Chapter 27, this volume). Most of the literature in this area deals with the ethical and medical aspects of brain death (Simmons and Abress, 1988), the attitude of the general public (Manninen and Evans, 1985), and the logistics of approaching physicians and families. The study reported here is a small exploratory investigation of one of the first cohorts of families who donated organs of their brain-dead relatives. Relatives were interviewed in depth 1 year after the donation.
