Minority and Nonminority MBA Progress in Business

The minority MBA may be thought of as a relative “newcomer” on the corporate business scene. In fact, until recently, minority representation was so sparse in the managerial ranks of corporate business that it would almost be termed “nonexistent” without greatly exaggerating the situation. However, the civil rights activities of the 1960s along with the affirmative action decisions of the 1970s have helped overcome the previously “lilly-white” management structures of many organizations that now include black and other minority members. In limited numbers and often in special roles, blacks have entered the management ranks of predominately white organizations. Furthermore, Alderfer, Tucker, Morgan, and Drasgow (1983) have observed that such changes in the composition of the managerial work force have brought the tensions associated with contemporary race relations to an arena that previously had been without racial problems largely because it had been without racial differences.
