Brightness, Emittance and Temperature
During the past fifty years there has been a spectacular growth in the number of applications for particle beams. The various practical requirements scan orders of magnitude in energy, current, and particle mass, from electrons to uranium ions. The behaviour of some of these beams, especially when self-fields are large and interaction with walls or background plasma is significant, can be extremely complex. Conditions can vary markedly along the length of the beam, and change rapidly with time.
