Psychophysiological Models of Psychosomatic Illness

Abstract

Psychophysiology has been defined as the science which concerns those physiological activities which underlie or relate to psychic functions1. In a sense, this definition incorporates the basic features of numerous non-systematic observations made for centuries by people of diverse professional origin, such as philosophers and practicing physicians, poets and physiologists. Despite having this long past, psychophysiology is formaly new as a separate discipline, its official birth dating back in the 1960’s when the first psychophysiological scientific society was founded and the journal “Psychophysiology” appeared.
