Free Radical Ring-Opening Polymerization of Spirotriene Monomers
Free radical ring-opening polymerizations are still quite novel in spite of the fact that ionic ring-opening polymerization of heterocyclic compounds, such as ethylene oxide and caprolactam, and Zieglar-Natta ring-opening polymerization of cyclic olefins are well known. In a general research program designed to investigate free radical ring-opening polymerization in our laboratories, it has been found that a wide variety of unsaturated cyclic monomers undergo free radical ring-opening polymerizations including unsaturated Spiro ortho esters, Spiro ortho carbonates, and cyclic ketene acetals.l To investigate the effect of aromatic ring formation on free radical ring-opening polymerization, spirotriene monomers, 3-methylenespiro[5,5]undeca-1,4-diene (1) and 3-methylenespiro[5,6]dodeca1,4-diene (2) have been synthesized and polymerized.
