This has been a book about an old quest but also a new field within psychiatry. The quest dates back to at least the time of Thorndike and then of Pavlov, who developed the novel notion that it was more important to study actual behavior than to engage in endless speculation about inner states. These scientists proceeded to develop experimental paradigms in animals in a laboratory setting and to perform studies of “experimental neurosis.”
