Philosophical Basis for the Development of Animal Models for Psychiatric Illnesses

This may be the most important chapter in this book. Though there is considerable activity and excitement in the animal modeling, or what might be called “comparative psychiatry,” area, there is no conceptual framework for guiding the development of this field. The relevant basic sciences are scattered and have not been brought together in any organized manner as they relate to the development of animal models. We do not know how to evaluate proposed animal models for a given disorder or even how to conceptualize the roles for animal models as part of a spectrum of approaches in psychopathology research.
