The Intraovarian Effect of Progesterone on Follicle Development in the Rabbit Ovary

Abstract

In most mammalian species examined, the growth of follicles seems to be blunted during periods of high circulating progesterone (pregnancy, luteal phase, pseudopregnancy). Reports of follicular profiles in rat (Greenwald, 1966; Bogovich et al. 1981), monkey (DiZerega and Hodgen, 1981) and human being (Baird et al. 198A) show that there is an inverse relationship between the luteal production of progesterone and the sizes of follicles present in the ovaries. In some species such as the rat, the inhibitory effect of the progestin may be exerted at the level of the pituitary-hypothalamus with a blockage of the secretion of FSH (Banks and Freeman, 1980; DePaolo and Barraclough, 1979). In other species such as the monkey and the human being, the effect of the progestin is likely exerted at the level of the ovary itself (DiZerega and Hodgen, 1981; Baird et al, 1984).
