Towards a Rational Assessment of Residual Flows Below Reservoirs

The growth in demand for public water supply in the U.K. has traditionally been met by constructing new reservoirs and by developing river or groundwater abstraction schemes. Direct supply reservoirs were the most common surface water source until the post war period of construction when an increasing number of pumped storage and regulating reservoirs were introduced. Future increases in demand will initially be met by improvements to the operating policies of existing reservoirs, especially by linking sources with different refill characteristics. The gross yield of reservoirs, is used to meet two demands; firstly the provision of a public water supply, and secondly the maintenance of a residual flow downstream of the reservoir for other water uses. In most cases this will be the statutory compensation flow immediately below the reservoir.
