Abstract

The molecular basis for the actions of insulin and other growth factors remains an outstanding problem in biology today. Delineation of the early steps of the mitogenic response is important for a proper understanding of the processes of both normal and abnormal cell proliferation, and other pathological conditions including diabetes. In this paper, which consists primarily of a review of work carried out here and elsewhere, a role for protein phosphorylation in the mediation of many of the metabolic responses of cells to growth factors is examined.
