Herpesviruses: Biology, Gene Regulation, Latency, and Genetic Engineering

Abstract

The family Herpesviridae includes a large number of structurally related DNA viruses classified on the basis of the architecture of the virion (1). Their hosts range from lower vertebrates to primates, and many species, including humans become infected with more than one Herpevirus. Members of this family have been known for over 60 years but only in the last decade have we begun to understand the full range of manifestations caused by these viruses as well as many fascinating aspects of their molecular biology. Although we know more about the human Herpesviruses (Herpes Simplex Viruses 1 and 2) (HSV-1 and HSV-2), Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV), Varicella-Zoster, and the Human Cytomegalovirus (HCMV) than about those infecting other species, the accrued knowledge is predictive of the properties of the family as a whole.
