The Reovirus Family at the Molecular Level

Abstract

In the late 1950’s a wide range of new viruses were being isolated from the respiratory and enteric tracts of humans, This work was fueled in the main by the studies on poliomyelitis and amongst the new isolates was a virus designated ECHO 10 which was originally placed in the Picornavirus family. However with a particle size of approximately 70 nm this virus was far larger than any other number of the picornaviridae and primarily as a result of this it was designated as the prototype of a new virus group which Sabin (1) proposed should be called Respiratory Enteric Orphan or REO viruses. This virus was the original serotype 1 of the mammalian reoviruses.
