Most antigens enter the host across a mucosal surface. Admitting nutrients, the surface that has the function of molecule uptake is the gastrointestinal alimentary canal. As molecules cross the mucosal surface of the gut, the molecules encounter the gut associated lymphoid tissue (GALT). Here antigens encounter either a primary or a secondary immune response. Antigen sampling takes place in the Peyer’s patch, some antigens contact the intraepithelial lymphocytes, and the majority of the antigens first encounter immunocytes in the ileal lamina propria (LP) lymphoid cell layer.
