The presence of H+-pumping ATPases in nonmitochondrial plant membranes, thought to be localized on plasmalemma and tonoplast, has been described (Marin, 1985; Marrè and Ballarin-Denti, 1985; Serrano, 1983; Sze, 1985). The H+-ATPases generate electrochemical gradients which supply the driving force for the fluxes of the major ions into cytoplasm and vacuoles.
