Application of the DTA to the Analysis of the Residual Austenite Transformation During Tempering

Abstract

In quenched steel, the structure usually consists of two major components: hard, brittle and ferromagnetic martensite, and soft, ductile and paramagnetic residual austenite (RA). A proper ratio of these constituants gives required properties for machinery parts manufactured from the steel. This is a reason why the amount of residual austenite (RA) has to be known. There are several methods to determine the amount of RA, such as X-rays, quantitative metallography, magnetic analysis, dilatometry, and differential thermal analysis (DTA). The most popular are X-ray and magnetic methods, the DTA is seldom used, despite its certain advantages. Some expected advantages of DTA are: the possibility of a complex analysis of the tempering process simultaneously with a determination of the amount of RA. Moreover, it is also possible to evaluate the three following values simultaneously using the DTA curve.
