Transient Phenomena in High Pressure Discharges

Observation of radiation emitted by transient discharges during the phases in which a gas passes from a non-conducting state to the highly conducting state of the arc phase have been mainly directed toward elucidating the time resolved spatial growth of space charge development. An understanding of the features of the emitted spectrum, however, has become necessary in order to extract information concerning the nature of the various plasma states built up by the discharge phases or to control discharges to achieve some desired gas fluorescence property as in lasers or other transient discharge light sources. An attempt is made here to bring together these two interests; plasma radiation and discharge physics.
