It is a well known fact in the medical profession, that the physician is not prepared for the discouraging and depressing consequences of his role as a bearer of bad news or for offering assistance to the patient for whom there is no hope. In face of every illness for which there is no known cause or cure, there exist reactions connected with the anguish caused by death which is an inevitable process of an unconscious identification with the patient. This anguish is also provoked by the thought of his own death.
