Abstract

In the past 10 years, improvements in respiratory care and monitoring have changed our approach to the ALS patient. Preventing respiratory failure in the past depended on intermittent manual tests like spirometry and chest X-ray, or invasive arterial blood gas studies. Patients can now be non-invasively and continuously monitored for hypoxia or hypercapnea, even while asleep. Intubation, tracheostomy and continuous mechanical ventilation are now routine care. Continuous mechanical ventilation can be done at home without continuous nursing care, and allow mobility with portable battery-operated ventilation.
