Charge Exchange and Ionisation in Collisions Between Positive Ions

Abstract

It is now twenty years since the first reported studies of collisions between positive ions. The first such investigation was carried out by Guidini et al (1965) and Sinda et al (1967) who obtained data of limited accuracy for H2 + — N2 + collisions at keV energies. In subsequent work Brouillard and Delfosse (1967) described a merged beam method for the study of He2+ — He+ charge transfer collisions at low energies and obtained a tentative result. However, since 1977 reliable experimental data on charge transfer and ionisation for a number of different collision processes have become available. Apart from our group in Belfast (Gilbody), groups in Culham (Harrison), Newcastle (Dolder), Louvairrla-Neuve (Brouillard) and Giessen (Salzborn) are now active in this field.
