Structure and Evolution of Gulf Stream Warm-Core Rings: A Physical Characterization

Part of the NATO Conference Series book series (NATOCS, volume 17)

A major field study was undertaken in 1981 and 1982 to examine the structure of Gulf Stream warm-core rings, the changes in structure with time, and the processes responsible for the observed changes. The research program was multi-disciplinary and included components from physical, biological and chemical oceanography, remote sensing, and mathematical modeling. This report focuses on the physical structure of warm-core rings and its change with time. Some ramifications of physical processes upon biology and chemistry are briefly discussed.
