Disturbed Phosphate Metabolism in Spontaneously Hypertensive Rats

In spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) Ca2+ metabolism is abnormal when compared to normotensive Wistar-Kyoto rats (WKY). Disturbances in Ca2+ metabolism include a slight decrease in serum ionized Ca2+ concentration (McCarron et al., 1981; Wright and Rankin, 1982), hypercalciuria (McCarron et al., 1981; Bindels et al., 1984) and increased serum parathyroid hormone (PTH) levels (McCarron et al., 1981; Anderson et al., 1983). Finally, a high Ca2+ diet lowers the blood pressure in SHR (McCarron et al., 1981) after 18 weeks, proving the functional importance of the disturbed Ca2+ homeostasis in SHR.
