The Relationship of Egg Production in the Chicken to its Major Histocompatibility Complex

I will hasten to make it clearfirst of all that I am not an acricultural scientist; but I am collaborating with people who are. My primary interests are in studies of the roles played by histocompatibility structures and in their evolutionary history. The major histocompatibility complex (MHC) of the chicken, the B-complex (Briles et al., 1982)., is of a 2-fold interest in this connection. First, the B-complex is the best investigated of non mammalian MHCs and, second, it belongs to an animal species of economic importance, which fact permits large-scale experimentation in spite of chickens being more demanding than mice on funds for their maintenance.
