Progesterone is the hormone that, in viviparous animals, prepares the endometrium for blastocyst implantation and allows maintainance of pregnancy. The histological modifications that occur in the endometrium during the secretory phase of the reproductive cycle have been described thoroughly.1 The increasing plasma concentrations of progesterone during the course of gestation suppress uterine prostaglandins and contractility and may contribute to a state of transplantation tolerance that prevents immunologic rejection of the fetus.2,3
