In recent years, the field of behavior therapy has seen a burgeoning of research and techniques in each of the five major areas of influence on the field. With the growing body of literature indicating that behavior therapy is a viable clinical discipline and even the treatment of choice for many difficulties, individuals from the variety of the helping professions are increasingly implementing behavioral techniques in efforts to ameliorate the clinically and socially significant problems that are presented to them. Professional organizations and governmental agencies such as the American Psychiatric Association, the Alcohol, Drug Abuse, and Mental Health Administration, and the National Institute of Mental Health now also recognize that behavior therapy has much to offer therapists and clients in the effort to relieve human suffering (Birk et al., 1973; Brown, Wienckowski & Stolz, 1975).
